Tree Care for Monterey Park Yards, Slopes and Parkways

Tree Service Monterey Park provides tree service to homeowners throughout Monterey Park, California, a city of about 61,000 residents (2020 census) roughly seven miles east of downtown Los Angeles. We take down trees, trim and thin canopies, clean up tall palms, grind stumps, help after storms and give straight opinions on trees you are unsure about. Every job begins with a visit to see the tree, what sits beneath it and how equipment and debris will move in and out.

Postwar yards with old trees

Monterey Park grew in a burst of subdivisions in the late 1940s and 1950s, after an earlier boom stalled in the Depression. Many lots now hold trees planted 60 or 70 years ago: Mexican fan palms well above the roofline, ficus with roots lifting walks and driveways, jacarandas spreading over patios, and pines and eucalyptus that grew far larger than anyone planned. An old tree is not automatically a hazard. It does deserve a close look for dead limbs, weak forks, decay at the base and branches resting over the roof.

Hills, slopes and tight access

The Monterey Hills and the Garvey Hills once split the city into northern and southern halves, and many homes still sit on sloped lots with steps, retaining walls and yards above or below the street. On those sites the cost often depends less on the tree than on how the wood reaches the truck. At the estimate we plan the route: whether limbs must be lowered on ropes instead of dropped, whether a lift can reach, how many trips through a side gate it will take, and how lawns, pavers and walls get protected.

Street trees belong to the City

Trees in the parkway between sidewalk and curb are public property. Monterey Park Municipal Code section 9.63.030 makes it unlawful to cut down, injure or remove trees in public parks and streets without a permit. Under section 9.63.060, the owner or occupant of the abutting property can apply in writing to the recreation and parks director for a removal permit, stating the reasons, and the director may require a replacement tree backed by a deposit. Planting in the street, or within five feet of a curb or sidewalk, also needs a permit (9.63.050), and the recreation and parks commission picks the species for each street (9.63.040). If your concern is a parkway tree, we help you figure out what the City handles before anyone cuts.

Wind season and the January 2025 storm

Santa Ana winds blow offshore, from the north and east, usually in autumn, and the region sees roughly 10 to 25 of these events a year. In early January 2025 the National Weather Service warned of a life-threatening, destructive windstorm, likely the most destructive since 2011, with gusts of 50 to 80 mph forecast for the Los Angeles basin and the San Gabriel Valley. Trees came down across the region, and Southern California Edison reported about 414,000 customers without power on the afternoon of January 8, counting both storm outages and preventive shutoffs. Trees tend to fail in wind for familiar reasons: heavy limb ends, split trunks, hidden decay, damaged roots and skirts of dead palm fronds. Pruning before fall cannot make a tree windproof, but it reduces the load and removes the pieces most likely to break off.

A beetle to watch for

Invasive shot hole borers are tiny beetles, roughly 2 millimeters long, that tunnel into trees and grow a Fusarium fungus inside the wood. The fungus clogs the tree's water-carrying tissue and branches die back. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources calls the result Fusarium dieback, and it can kill branches and, in heavy attacks, whole trees. Hosts named by UC include box elder, coral tree, silk tree, castor bean, avocado and several sycamore species. If we spot signs of attack during an estimate, we show you, and infested wood is chipped and hauled rather than left as firewood to carry the beetle elsewhere.

Trees near wires

Overhead lines run along many Monterey Park streets and back lot lines. Cutting near energized high-voltage lines is work for the utility's line-clearance crews, not for homeowners or general tree crews. When a tree grows into wires, we explain which part the utility should handle, and plan our own pruning or removal around it.

What we do

  • Tree removal: full takedowns of dead, leaning, damaged or unwanted trees, including sectional removal over roofs and fences
  • Tree trimming: deadwood removal, thinning, clearance from roofs and walls, and structural pruning of younger trees
  • Palm tree trimming: dead frond and seed pod removal on fan palms, queen palms and date palms
  • Stump grinding: grinding stumps below grade, with surface roots and cleanup on request
  • Emergency tree service: fallen trees and hanging limbs after wind or failure
  • Arborist consultations: an on-site look at health, risk and options before you decide

How pricing works

Every estimate is written and itemized: each tree, the work on it, the stump if you want it ground, and the haul-away. Price follows the tree's height and spread, what it hangs over, how the wood gets out, and whether lines or slopes complicate the work. National cost guides give a starting point, and our service pages list those ranges with their sources. The written estimate for your yard is the price. California generally requires a state contractor license for tree work above a small-job dollar limit, so ask any company you consider for its license number and check it on the Contractors State License Board website.

Common Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Monterey Park?

HomeGuide's national figures put most removals at $400 to $1,200, with trees under 30 feet at $200 to $500 and trees 60 to 80 feet at $850 to $2,000. Tall palms, sloped lots, wires and tight access push prices up. Your written estimate after we see the tree is the actual price.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Monterey Park?

For a tree in the public parkway or other City property, yes. Section 9.63.060 of the Municipal Code requires a written application to the recreation and parks director, who may require a replacement tree. Those permit sections cover trees in public parks and streets. For a tree in a private yard, confirm with the City's Planning Division before removal, and check any HOA rules or CC&Rs.

Who is responsible for the tree between the sidewalk and the street?

That parkway tree is on public right of way, and the code treats trees in public streets as City trees. You cannot remove or seriously cut it without a permit. If it is damaged, dropping limbs or lifting the sidewalk, report it to the City and ask about a removal permit if you want it gone.

When is the best time to trim trees here?

For most trees, late summer or early fall, before Santa Ana season, is a good time to remove deadwood and lighten heavy limbs. Jacarandas are usually pruned after they finish flowering, and palms are cleaned once or twice a year. Dead, cracked or hanging limbs should come off whenever you notice them.

How often should palm trees be trimmed?

HomeGuide's palm guide suggests once or twice a year depending on the species and how fast it grows. Removing only dead and dying fronds, flower stalks and seed pods is enough. Cutting off healthy green fronds weakens the palm and can slow its growth.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house or car?

Get everyone away from the tree and anything it touches. If wires are down or tangled in branches, stay back and call 911 and the electric utility. Photograph the damage for your insurer, then call us to remove the tree in sections so nothing else gets crushed on the way down.

Can you remove a tree that is growing into power lines?

We can remove or prune the parts of a tree that are well clear of the lines. Anything close to energized high-voltage wires must be cleared by the utility's line-clearance crews first. We will tell you at the estimate which part of the job is ours and which needs the utility.

Does stump grinding leave a hole?

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of chips mixed with soil. Those chips can be raked back into the hole and mounded, or hauled off and replaced with topsoil if you plan to plant grass or a new tree in that spot. Expect some settling over the following months as buried roots decay.

Why Homeowners Call Tree Service Monterey Park

Access planned before the price

Slopes, side gates, pools, walls and wires are checked at the estimate, so the plan for lowering and hauling wood is part of the quote, not a surprise on the day.

Itemized written estimates

Each tree, each stump and the cleanup are priced on their own lines, which makes it easy to compare bids or trim the scope.

Public trees handled correctly

We tell you when a tree is in the City's parkway and needs a permit, instead of cutting it and leaving you to deal with the City.

Honest calls on keeping a tree

If deadwood removal or thinning will solve the problem, that is what we recommend. If a tree really should come down, you hear why.

Where We Work

Most of our work is in Monterey Park itself, from the hillside streets around the Monterey Hills and Garvey Hills to the flatter blocks in the south part of the city. We also take jobs in Alhambra to the north, Rosemead to the northeast, Montebello to the south, and unincorporated East Los Angeles to the west, plus San Gabriel, South Pasadena, San Marino and Temple City. Each of these cities writes its own rules for street trees and, in some cases, private trees, while East Los Angeles is unincorporated, so Los Angeles County rules apply there instead of a city code. Lot sizes, slopes and the mix of trees change from one town to the next too. Each town page covers what is different there.
